What’s an ultrasound?

Medical sonography is the transmission of high-frequency sound waves into the body and the conversion of the reflections into images of the organs within the body.

What are the different types of Ultrasound examination?

  • Abdomen: to examine the liver, gall bladder, kidneys, pancreas, spleens and aorta.
  • Pelvis & trans-vaginal: to examine the uterus, ovaries, urinary bladder and appendix.
  • Obstetric: to examine a baby, uterus and ovaries.
  • Carotids: to examine neck vessels for clots or narrowing which can lead to stroke.
  • Cardiac (heart): to examine the heart and its valves for evidence of abnormalities.
  • Thyroid: to examine the thyroid gland for cysts, and tumors.
  • Extremities: to check for clots in veins and arteries.
  • Testicular/Scrotum: to check for hernia, infection of epididymis, fluids or tumors.
  • Transrectal: to examine the prostate and lesions around the rectum.

Is it safe to do an Ultrasound examination?

Yes, Ultrasound waves are not X-Rays. These waves are safe for infants, pregnant women and patients in general.

  • Abdominal/pelvic pain
  • Extremities pain or swelling
  • Stoke/Dizziness or vertigo
  • Pregnancy
  • Menstrual irregularities or bleeding
  • Thyroid diseases or swelling
  • Scrotal pain or swelling / STD

What to do on the day of the exam?

  • If you are coming for abdominal ultrasound, please do not drink or eat for 6 hours prior to exam.
  • For pelvic exam, please drink 20-36 ounces of fluids an hour prior to your arrival to the exam.

When can I get the result of the study?

You will get your report instantly since the procedure is performed by ultrasound certified physician, who will interpret the ultrasound exam and provide you with the report
